After searching the internet I ran into this thread. What I did to solve the issue is to disable on IE add INS. Don’t know if one of you mentioned this or not. As I was adding them back in the problem came back with the flash player add in (flash6.ocx) I enabled all add INS with the exception of the flash player and the issue went away. I then upgraded to flash seven which changed the flash6.ocx to flash9.ocx. Tested it and the issue appears to be resolved

Just wanted to let you know that I got one fix to work. Details here: http://jtbworld.blogspot.com/2007/08/ie7-and-start-crash-solution.html

Re: IE7 crashes when clicking on drop-down boxes

Good to hear.

Can you see a connection with the crashes in Access 2007?

Re: IE7 crashes when clicking on drop-down boxes

Apparently it's related to this KB article:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/936953

The workaround there seems to fix the problem.

The IE team is looking into how this particular interaction causes the crash.

Re: IE7 crashes when clicking on drop-down boxes

Well, on the bright side, I think I'm going to be replacing the existing Start menu hook with something different pretty soon (but it'll need to be native C++ so it's a pretty major change). That mechanism won't use the automation APIs that are causing the IE problem - assuming the new mechanism works at all, it should be a lot better anyway :)

Re: IE7 crashes when clicking on drop-down boxes

I also think mshtml.dll might be the real problem. There is a newer version. I have not been able to get my hands on it though. Could be worth a try. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/933006/en-us

But another thing is that I also noticed that Access 2007 crashes when Start++ is running. Often it is when I try to create a query and when it happens I can use the same steps to reproduce it as long as Start++ is running. From what I can see mshtml.dll is not loaded by Access so I don't see the connection there.

Re: IE7 crashes when clicking on drop-down boxes

Looks like it isn't really a "problem" with Start++, but rather it's a problem with any application that uses the System.Windows.Automation library and registers event handler on Automation events (which, as you might guess, is something that Start++ does).

I'll have to do more digging to figure out why the heck it crashes in the first place. My guess is there's an automation/accessibility related bug in mshtml.dll.

Re: IE7 crashes when clicking on drop-down boxes

Wow, yeah I can reproduce that problem. I can't even begin to imagine how Start++ could be causing the browser to crash in mshtml.dll, but I'll try to figure it out today.

IE7 crashes when clicking on drop-down boxes

Hi,

I run into some crash problems using IE7 on Vista and had trouble to find the cause.

http://jtbworld.blogspot.com/2007/05/ie7-crashes-when-clicking-on-drop-down.html

Finally I nailed it down to that when Start++ is running this happens. If I close Start++ it works as expected. I could reproduce this on an installation on a Virtual PC as well.

Can someone else that has Start++ try the sample drop-down that is on the link above and see if IE7 crashes?
