    Start++ & Windows 7

    Is start++ compatible with windows 7, and if it isn't will it eventually be compatible?

    The current build is not (or is at most partially functional), but I'll be releasing an update to address that shortly.

    This is excellent news - is there an RSS feed or mailing list to get updates from? Or do you have a timeframe for shortly? Start++ is great, missing it on Windows 7.

    Re: Start++ & Windows 7

    Unfortunately I've hit a small snag, and may be unable to make Start++ work completely on the Win7 Beta build.  I'm going to see if I can get the necessary piece of functionality restored before the final release.  If not, I may pursue an alternative hooking mechanism (which unfortunately is a bit more complicated).  I'll post an update when I have anything more to share.

    Re: Start++ & Windows 7

    Hi,

    I am using it successfully with Windows 7. The only problem I have come across, is that when I try to launch an application (putty.exe), it seems to launch as an administrator, showing the "User Account Control" window. And then it is not able to communicate with another process (pageant.exe), which it needs to retrieve the SSH key. Are these problems related to the lacking support for Win7? To be honest, I never tried this on Vista.

    Anyway, thanks for a really cool application!

    missing vista start menu

    Hi Brandon, when I installed start++ (great program btw) it reverted my start menu to the old win95 grey menu, as well as disabling the option to change menus in the StartMenu Properties.  Is there a way I can change it back?  I didnt realize how much i was used to the new start emnu style.  Thank you very much. :)

    Re: Start++ & Windows 7

    I was using this fine with 7000...granted I only use the basic command startlets (totally hooked on g for google) plus a few custom commands I added.  As of build 7068 I am now getting "Windows cannot find 'c:\users\kludeman\AppData\Local\Start++\LNKs\g.lnk test'.  Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again." The file exists, as I can browse to it.  I am pretty sure it is some sort of permissions issue being in that appdata folder and all that.

    I have tried setting everything I can think of start++ wise to run as admin and compat mode for vista, but nothing.

    As I said before, I never really used the start gadgets and search startlets, and was optimistic that what I DID use was going to continue to work.

    Never really realized just how many times a day I type "g {whatever}" in search to kick off a search!

    Any suggestions would be appreciated..

    Re: Start++ & Windows 7

    I installed start++ on Windows 7 RC. It is working fine for playing music, video, pictures. But, I don't get the custom UI as you get when searching for pic or searching internet through the command "g start++" or "l star++" ( without quotes). Is that the current behaviour on RC or am I missing something?

    That's the current behavior on Windows 7, until I find time to figure out a way to make the Vista behavior work with the new start menu in Win7.

    Re: Start++ & Windows 7

    I started using START++ about a year ago with Vista. Super cool.

    I then started using Windows 7 beta .... nice touch Microsoft.

    But they left your piece out Brandon! (gasp).

    So I wrote in and used the few contacts I have to encourage embedding this in Windows 7. Seems that this call to action has not been heard (no surprise).

    So do us all a favor and make Windows 7 an even better pace ..... :)   (Noting that this does not work properly on build 7100.... uugh)

    no one wants the Vista behaviour in Windows 7, the windows 7 behaviour is so much better, you should find a way to adopt that.

    Any Update ?! id really love to use Start++ with Win7, its so beautiful, dont let it die. Would be good for the community to release the source if you dont plan any more updates.

    Re: Start++ & Windows 7

    I've been looking for a way to use Search Prefixes in Windows 7, such as G <term> for googling. Looks like Start++ is supposed to be able to do that, but hasn't been updated yet.  Now that Win 7 final is out, hopefully it will be soon!

     In the mean time, does anyone else know how to set something like this up?  They were originally introduced in Windows XP's TweakUI tool from MS (and I think it worked through IE6) but there's no more TweakUI, and I can't find a similar option in IE8.

    Re: Start++ & Windows 7

    I would like the same thing -- a simple way to define shortcuts for the Start menu in Windows 7, such as "g" for Google, "wiki" for Wikipedia, etc.

    So I'm really looking forward to the updated version of Start++.

    In the meantime ---  the shortcut functionality can be provided (even when Start++ is not running) by a set of *.cmd files in C:\Users\your_name\AppData\Local\Start++\CMDs .

    It looks like it should be possible to write a simple set of *.exe commands that would invoke IE, open folder, launch Searches, etc.

    Has anyone been able to achieve this?

     ... still running Vista for now..   Thanks.

    Re: Start++ & Windows 7

    Brandon, I'm so addicted to the functionality of Start ++ that I just donated as an encouragement for you to keep working on Windows 7 compatibility!

    Maybe the others longing for Win 7 integration will follow suit!

    Thanks for a great tool.

    Vaughn
